Lead Free Survey

You know the saying, “the only thing constant in life is change”. The electronics industry is definitely a fine example of that statement, and the most influential change facing us today is the migration to lead-free and RoHS compliancy. Per the European Directive, applicable products entering the EU are to be RoHS compliant by July 1, 2006 . California has also jumped onto the bandwagon and will require applicable RoHS compliancy by January 1, 2007 . Harrington is in the process of implementing this initiative and we are asking for your input as we develop our strategy.

Additional challenges face component procurement as many components currently used on lead assemblies will be, or already have been, migrated to lead-free, the vendor then discontinuing the lead item. Some vendors will continue to offer lead items but with substantially increased minimum buys with severely long delivery times. Some vendors, most of which are IC makers, are discontinuing portions of their current lead offerings which will require a redesign of existing assemblies that use those parts.

If you are not sure whether or not your products are exempt, please consult your firm's legal staff or counsel for assistance.
